SHAH ALAM, Nov 8 — The Seri Kembangan state constituency is nearly at its maximum rate of development, with only an estimated 20 to 30 per cent of vacant land or forest area left untouched, said assemblyman Wong Siew Ki.

She urged the state government and local council to plan ahead and execute a sustainable, environmentally friendly development plan for the people’s future well-being.

“As the most developed state and driver of the national economy, Selangor has high population density and significant development needs, but this rapid growth affects the environment and people’s quality of life,” Wong told Media Selangor.

She added that the only undeveloped area in the constituency is the forest near Bukit Serdang along the Maju Expressway (MEX).

“Based on rough estimates, around 70 to 80 per cent of land in my constituency has been developed. The effects of this rapid growth are becoming more apparent, including from the rising frequency of flash floods that disrupt residents’ lives,” she said.

Wong stressed that all government levels — central, state and local — must prepare early for future development challenges by introducing more sustainable approaches.

“In future development plans, we must incorporate the ‘sponge city’ concept based on modern green technology to reduce negative impacts on the ecosystem,” she said.

The sponge city approach aims to leave areas to absorb, retain and filter rainwater to lower flood risks and preserve urban ecological balances.

Wong added that such sustainable approaches must be incorporated immediately as development is a race against time and will never cease. She also suggested various green city development models be explored to suit different localities.

Meanwhile, she emphasised One-Stop Centre officers’ important role in ensuring development project approvals consider environmental sustainability factors.

“Additional conditions in development approvals are still traditional — like allocating land for schools or upgrading basic infrastructure. We must add green and sustainable development components as new requirements,” Wong said.

The 2026 Selangor Budget will be tabled on November 14 with a focus on fiscal resilience, human capital development, and strengthening the state’s position as Malaysia’s main economic driver.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the budget is a transitional one that not only closes the curtain on the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), but sets the stage for the RS-2, which will be tabled next year.
