SABAK BERNAM, Nov 6 — A total of 20 houses in Parit 5, Pantai Sentosa, Sekinchan were affected after an embankment burst earlier this morning.
Following the incident, the Sabak Bernam District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) activated a temporary relief centre (PPS) at Dewan Seri Sekinchan to accommodate seven affected families.
Its chairman Ali Sadikin Sadin said the PPS began operating at 8pm to house victims who had earlier sought temporary shelter at Balai Raya Tuan Haji Norhasni in Parit 5.
“All agencies have been instructed to remain on standby to deal with this situation, including providing immediate assistance to affected victims and conducting continuous monitoring to ensure their safety and welfare,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Sekinchan state assemblyman Dato' Ng Suee Lim visited the affected area this afternoon together with the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department's (DID) director Datuk Mohd Nazri Yasmin and his technical team.
Their inspection found the situation under control, although high tide continued to cause water overflow into a major canal near local farmlands.
He said the Selangor DID had taken swift action to repair the damaged embankment by carrying out temporary sealing works and installing high-capacity water pumps to reduce seawater overflow into agricultural and residential areas.
“The initial measures implemented by DID, including the installation of water pumps, have successfully reduced seawater overflow in the field and stabilised water levels.
“We need more allocations to address this incident and must prepare earlier. All embankments should be elevated,” Ng said.
Residents in high-risk areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of the authorities to avoid any untoward incidents.
The public may contact the Disaster Operations Control Centre's (PKOB) emergency hotline at 019-333 3735 to report any disaster-related incidents in their respective areas.
