SEPANG, Nov 1 — The Selangor government is expected to prioritise mental health, disease prevention, and environmental education in the upcoming 2026 Selangor Budget tabling.

State executive councillor for public health Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the rise in mental health-related cases such as bullying, abuse, and suicide, particularly among students, requires serious intervention and early action at both school and community levels.

“I was deeply affected by the recent murder case at a school in my constituency of Bandar Utama.

“That is why I discussed with the Menteri Besar the need to implement several pilot projects based on the recent school murder case, to strengthen the mental health support system,” she said when met after officiating the Selangor Environment Day 2025 celebration at Paya Indah Wetlands in Dengkil today.

She said the pilot projects will focus on empowering community-based support roles, such as peer counsellors in schools, to serve as the first line of detection and assistance.

As of June this year, Selangor recorded the highest number of juvenile crime cases, with a total of 892 cases.

Jamaliah also revealed that the state will soon roll out the free Ambulans Kita Selangor initiative, which aims to improve access to emergency healthcare services at the community level.

“Our approach is preventive. We want interventions to happen earlier, not only after patients come to clinics or hospitals,” she said.

On her environmental portfolio, Jamaliah said the state will focus on increasing awareness among youth through programmes carried out in secondary schools together with the Environment Department.

“Students will be appointed as ambassadors and agents of change to educate their communities on the importance of environmental conservation, not only for future generations but also for the present.

“We will also incorporate environmental law education so that the public, especially teenagers, understand how to report emergencies such as fires or pollution."

The 2026 Selangor Budget will be tabled on November 14 at the State Legislative Assembly.
