SHAH ALAM, Oct 31 — Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has intensified flood mitigation efforts across several hotspots in the city to reduce the risk of flash floods, said Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim.

“We have put up flood walls and built temporary retention ponds at six hotspots,” he said as reported by The Star, following the council’s full board meeting at Wisma MBSA, yesterday.

According to him, flood mitigation works have been completed at Jalan Sempuran 25/81, Jalan Sampoton 3/11, Kemuning Greenhill in Section 32, and Jalan Teluk Batu at AMJ Industrial Park.

Meanwhile, projects in Taman Bukit Kemuning and Taman Greenhill 3 in Bukit Rimau are still in the planning phase, with construction expected to begin by mid-November.

Fauzi said flood walls were also installed at Jalan Haji Bakri in Taman Bunga Raya, Section 30, as well as near the monsoon drain and residential areas in Taman Alam Indah, Section 33.

He said MBSA has directed its contractors to intensify maintenance efforts, including the cleaning of drains and retention ponds to ensure smooth water flow.

Separately, Fauzi said MBSA is preparing several tourism initiatives in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026. This year, the council allocated RM300,000 for promotions and programmes such as brochure printing and familiarisation trips with travel writers.

“One of the main attractions in Shah Alam is the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, which receives up to 100,000 visitors a year from countries including Japan, China, South Korea and the United States.”

To further enhance the city’s appeal, he said MBSA aims to position Shah Alam as a “City of Arts” through weekly cultural performances and workshops at Laman Budaya beginning next year.

The meeting also discussed the growing traffic congestion in the Elmina housing area, which has been linked to motorists using the route as a shortcut to the Guthrie Corridor Expressway.

Fauzi said MBSA will hold discussions with the developer to identify short and medium-term solutions.

“Although traffic impact assessment studies were conducted before planning permission was granted, other factors, such as new developments in nearby areas also contribute to congestion.

“For future projects, there will be greater emphasis on improving public transport connectivity,” he said.
