SHAH ALAM, Oct 25 — The state government is ready to help bring home 61 students who were stranded at the Soekarno-Hattta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, yesterday, due to issues with a travel agency, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said his office will be in contact with the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta to get updates on the situation and channel aid, including the management of return flights, to the students.
“We will contact the Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia (Jakarta) to assess the type of aid we can give, especially in terms of logistics and flight support.
“We will also check with the schools to ensure the welfare of all students,” he said after launching Festival IDEA @ Selangor at Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), here today.
Amirudin assured that the Selangor government is committed to resolving the issue as soon as possible to ensure the students’ smooth and safe return to Malaysia.
Yesterday, media reports said 61 students from a primary and a secondary school in Selangor were stranded for over three hours at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after their travel agent failed to handle their transport and lodging.
Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin said the embassy acted quickly by accommodating the students at a hotel near the airport.
