SHAH ALAM, Oct 22 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has been honoured with the Malaysia Scroll of Honour Award for Outstanding Organisation in Urban Crisis Response, presented in conjunction with National World Habitat Day.
Klang Mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said the award recognises the city’s success in implementing the Love Sungai Klang Action Plan: Sustainable City Initiative in Addressing Environmental and Urban Crises.
He was quoted by The Star as saying that the initiative has significantly improved the river’s ecosystem through coordinated clean-up efforts and active community participation.
“The action plan achieved a 60 per cent reduction in plastic waste, improved water quality from polluted to moderately clean, and reduced flood incidents,” he said.
The award was presented by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming during a ceremony at Semarak Hall, Cyberjaya, yesterday.
Hamid said the achievement was made possible through the support of stakeholders and local communities, making it a model for sustainable river management and ecological transformation.
“Improving river cleanliness is not only important to ensure clean water quality, but also helps to protect wildlife habitats.”
Hamid said the council’s approach is aligned with the principles of sustainable development outlined in national policies.
He expressed hope that the recognition would inspire other local authorities to adopt collaborative and sustainable approaches in managing urban and environmental issues.
About 21 kilometres of the 120-kilometre Sungai Klang lies within MBDK’s jurisdiction, flowing through five housing areas and 11 villages.
