SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 — Selangor has approved RM64,000 in disaster relief to assist residents affected by the storm that struck Sijangkang on Wednesday (October 15).
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said RM1,000 will be distributed to each of the 64 households whose homes sustained damage.
The 14 individuals identified by the Selangor Health Department as suffering injuries during the incident will also each receive RM1,000 in assistance. The victims, including a service centre officer, are currently receiving treatment at government hospitals.
RM320,000 will also be allocated from the State Disaster Fund to repair damage to SRA Kampung Medan, one of the buildings affected by the storm.
“This is to ensure affected students can return to school safely,” he said in a statement following the State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting today.
This assistance is in addition to earlier contributions from state agencies like Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council, which have channelled RM564,000 to six schools, a service centre, and families affected by the disaster.
Yesterday, a storm wreaked havoc in Sijangkang, injuring several people and damaging multiple buildings, including four schools and the Sijangkang State Assembly coordination office.
A temporary relief centre (PPS) was opened at Dewan Harmoni in Kampung Sijangkang, with the incident classified as a Level One disaster.
The Works Ministry has estimated the cost of cleaning the six public buildings damaged by the storm yesterday at RM1.9 million.
Earlier today, Universiti Putra Malaysia's Forestry and Environment Faculty senior lecturer Zulfa Hanan Ash’aari said the storm was caused by a squall line that brought thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds over a short period.
