PETALING JAYA, Oct 16 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has allocated RM8.72 million to upgrade several sports facilities ahead of the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2026.
Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said RM3.8 million will be used to upgrade the hockey stadium’s main building, including the field and lights.
“RM2.8 million more will be used to upgrade the racetrack and audience seating, followed by the Kelana Jaya tennis courts (RM785,000), Kompleks Sukan Arena (RM700,000), and Kompleks Sukan Astaka (RM615,000),” he said when tabling the MBPJ Budget 2026 at the council headquarters here today.
Zahri added that with Selangor hosting Sukma 2026, several events will be held in Petaling Jaya including hockey, tennis, BMX and squash, with the closing ceremony to take place at the MBPJ Stadium.
He said the MBPJ has also allocated RM33.6 million to build public facilities that encourage healthy lifestyles and are inclusive for local residents.

Sukma Selangor 2026 will be held from August 15 to 24, with the Para Sukma from September 5 to 14. The opening ceremony will be held at the Sepang International Circuit.
This edition of the Games will feature 474 events in 37 sports, including 30 core sports like rugby and seven core sports such as e-sports, cricket and silambam.
Besides Petaling Jaya, events will be held across Selangor, except for track cycling which will be held at the National Velodrome in Negeri Sembilan.
Meanwhile, while tabling the MBPJ budget, he said the council’s overall spending for 2026 is capped at RM521.7 million, including RM411.2 million for operational expenditure and RM110.5 million for development.
Zahri said the financial plan was prepared with a deficit of RM25.6 million, or 5.16 per cent of the overall amount, compared with the deficit of RM1.35 million (0.28 per cent) this year.
“This deficit will be borne by the MBPJ Cash Reserve. The higher expenditure is also due to the implementation of development management strategies to support our aspirations towards a sustainable city,” he explained.
