China Consulate denies issuing warning over Sabah water supply

KOTA KINABALU, Oct 13 — The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu has dismissed as disinformation recent social media claims that the Embassy of China in Malaysia issued a "strong warning" to the Sabah Government over the water supply issue.

It said that neither the embassy nor the consulate had ever issued any so-called "warning" or "threat" to the Sabah government, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), or any other local authorities regarding the water supply issue.

"The above claim is disinformation. Neither the Embassy of China in Malaysia nor the Consulate General of China in Kota Kinabalu has ever issued any so-called 'warning' or 'threat' to the Sabah State Government, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), or any other local authorities regarding the water supply issue, nor have we mentioned any so-called 'travel advisory'," the consulate said in a statement today.

It added that it would continue to uphold the spirit of China-Malaysia friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation, and further strengthen practical collaboration between China and Malaysia, as well as between China and Sabah, in areas like tourism, trade, and culture.

The consulate will also continue to facilitate people-to-people exchanges and local cooperation between the two countries.

It urged relevant media outlets to base their reporting on facts, to contribute positively to the friendly relations between both sides, and to avoid disseminating unverified information that may mislead the public.
