PETALING JAYA, Oct 13 — The Selangor Rugby Union will finalise player selection for the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) by February next year at the latest.

Its president cum Kampung Tunku state assemblyman Lim Yi Wei said they aim to retain the gold medal for the women’s team while striving for improved performance from the men’s squad.

“Our target for the women’s team is to maintain the gold medal. For the men’s team, we hope to perform better than before.

“Last year, we were perhaps less fortunate as we faced Johor in the quarter-finals at Sukma,” she told Media Selangor.

Lim was speaking after attending the Community Engagement Session for the ‘Safer School Streets’ pilot project at the PJ Smart Centre in the MBPJ Building today.

She hopes the state government will allocate more funding for sports in the upcoming 2026 Selangor Budget, particularly for alternative sports.

Lim added that it is time for the state government to consider increasing allocations in preparation for the biennial games next year.

“The same goes for infrastructure. In Selangor, there are over 400 football fields, but only three rugby fields in the Klang Valley, which is clearly insufficient.

“I hope we are given more support for alternative and high-potential sports. As we saw in the recent Olympics, Indonesia won gold in an event that many did not expect,” she said.

Sukma Selangor will take place from August 15 to August 24 next year, featuring 474 events across 37 sports, making Selangor the largest host in the history of the games.
