SHAH ALAM, Sept 24 — The Selangor Rugby Union is actively preparing its best line-up of athletes for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Selangor 2026, with the women’s squad aiming to defend their championship title while the men’s squad targets a semi-final berth.
Its president Lim Yi Wei said they have six months to evaluate and select athletes truly qualified to represent the state.
“We are still in the process of athlete selection and are currently undergoing centralised training. There are still six months left to identify athletes who can represent Selangor at Sukma.
“For the upcoming tournament, we aim for the women’s rugby squad to retain their championship, while the men’s squad should at least reach the semi-finals, compared to the Sarawak Sukma previously, where they only placed fifth,” she told Media Selangor.
The Selangor women’s rugby team had closed their Sukma Sarawak 2024 campaign on a high note by clinching gold after defeating the hosts 12-7 in the final. In contrast, the men’s squad finished in fifth place.
Sukma Selangor 2026 is scheduled to take place from August 15 to August 24, followed by Para Sukma from September 5 to September 14. The opening ceremony will be held at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), while the closing ceremony will take place at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Stadium.
This edition will feature 474 events across 37 sports, including 30 core sports like rugby and seven optional sports, among them e-sports, cricket, and silambam.
Nine districts and 12 local authorities across the state will host the games, except for track cycling, which will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
