KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — The state government has set forth its vision to position Selangor as the care hub of the Asia-Pacific region, developing a comprehensive care economy ecosystem that caters to the needs of every generation.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said implementing this vision aligns with Selangor’s standing as a preferred destination for healthcare, wellness, and retirement tourism.
“To achieve this, Selangor will prioritise modern and inclusive care infrastructure that provides high-quality facilities for childcare, eldercare, rehabilitation, and assisted living. It will also provide professional care services comprising trained caregivers, standardised service delivery, and clear career pathways.
“The vision also includes fostering innovation and investment to drive the care-based industry's growth, including assistive technologies, digital health platforms, and community-based services,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking at the Selangor International Care Summit (SICS) 2025 opening ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today.
He added that the care economy can potentially generate both economic and social returns while creating three times as many job opportunities as construction or other capital-intensive sectors.
“Investment in care is not an act of charity; it is an economic strategy. Every ringgit invested in care yields returns in the form of jobs, productivity, and social stability.
“Care investments create local and sustainable employment, especially for women and youth. They enable more people to participate in the workforce, increase household income, and strengthen the national tax base,” Amirudin said.
To ensure this vision becomes a reality, the state government will establish the Selangor Care Network, a coordination platform that will bring together government agencies, the local authorities, the private sector, and civil society.
“We will work closely with Federal ministries and partners from the TransformCare Asia-Pacific Initiative to align Selangor’s efforts with national and regional priorities.
“Selangor aims to become a care innovation learning hub, testing models that can inform Malaysia’s national care system and be shared with Asean partners,” he said.
