SHAH ALAM, Sept 26 — The Selangor Agrofest 2025 brings a fresh attraction this year with the display of 4,000 orchid plants for visitors.

The four-day event, running until Sunday at the Dataran Karnival Stadium Shah Alam, features a forest-themed orchid showcase with 10 orchid varieties at the flora pavilion.

Selangor Agriculture Department's Deputy Director (Development) Wan Muhammad Zulkarnain Baharuddin said that one of the highlights is the orchid exhibition featuring plants grown in Selangor.

"All these orchids are sourced from entrepreneurs at the Permanent Food Production Park in Bukit Changgang. The 4,000 plants are arranged to create an orchid forest, designed to inspire visitors.

"“In addition, the second segment we are presenting is an exhibition on high-value crop technology in Selangor, like MelonSel in autoport systems that can store fertiliser and water without using electricity.

“We are also showcasing Internet of Things (IoT) systems connected to all the crops, including orchids,” he told Media Selangor.

Meanwhile, Koperasi Warga Hijrah Selangor Berhad's (Kohijrah) managing director Datuk Mohammad Syukri Ismail said they are introducing their auction system, implemented at the Sijangkang auction centre, specifically for entrepreneurs.

"“We are providing opportunities for entrepreneurs, including farmers and livestock breeders, to become vendors and take part in auctions at Kohijrah’s auction centre. To date, over 300 auctions have been successfully held since this system was introduced.

“Furthermore, by the event's second day, 100 entrepreneurs have already registered with Kohijrah. They are keen to market their products with us for wider market reach,” he said.

Elsewhere, the event's floral exhibition has not only managed to attract local flower enthusiasts but also visitors from Pahang.

Wan Siti Nor Wan Yusuf, 51, from Jerantut, said she made the trip with her husband solely to see the showcase of various orchid species as well as agricultural technologies.

“I have always loved orchids, and at this exhibition, the Agriculture Department has brought a wide variety, including species that are hard to find. It is very interesting.

“Exhibitions like this are very beneficial as the public can learn about the methods used in agriculture for crops like chillies, rice, and pineapples, as well as livestock,” she said.

For private sector employee Azura Mohd Bharil, 44, her first visit to the Selangor Agrofest provided an opportunity to experience products created by entrepreneurs that are not yet available on the broader market.

“Most of the entrepreneurs’ products here are hard to find outside or are mainly promoted on social media. With programmes like this, I get to experience first-hand the uniqueness of each product.

“There are also special activities prepared for children, not just adults,” she said.

Meanwhile, Cravia Carrot Chips' marketing officer Rahizad Abdullah said the event helps expand the reach of their products.

“These carrot chips were introduced in 2016. Among their unique features are that they contain no preservatives or sugar and are a source of vitamin A.

"Production was interrupted during the pandemic, but we bounced back by marketing them through social media. “By taking part in programmes like this, it becomes a platform for us to expand sales not only in Selangor but also beyond Malaysia,” he said.

Activities like the Agro Night Run, a fruit weight guessing contest, a junior chef competition, Jualan Ehsan Rahmah sales, and performances by artists also enlivened the event.
