SHAH ALAM, Aug 22 — Selangor’s men’s and women’s futsal teams winning gold medals at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) has been described as a catalyst for the state’s football revival and its return to dominance on the national sporting stage.
State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the achievement proved that sports development efforts in Selangor are beginning to bear fruit, with young athletes delivering outstanding performances.
“Congratulations to the Selangor women’s futsal team for winning gold for the first time at SUKMA, and also to the men’s futsal squad, who successfully retained the title they won in Sarawak.
“This is a proud achievement. It proves that the training and athlete development programmes carried out by the Selangor Sports Council are producing results,” he said.
Najwan was speaking to Media Selangor after watching the Selangor women’s futsal team claim their maiden gold medal after defeating the Federal Territories 5-0 in the final at Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Shah Alam yesterday.
The councillor, who also presented the gold medals to the players, hopes the success of the two futsal squads will inspire the Selangor men’s football team, which is scheduled to face Johor in the final at Stadium MBPJ in Kelana Jaya today.
He wants the men’s football squad to maintain its excellent momentum in pursuit of the gold medal, thereby completing Selangor’s dominance in both football and futsal.
“If we win the men’s football final, we will have swept all the football and futsal categories, and we hope the success in futsal will inspire the men’s players to perform even better,” Najwan said.
Of the four gold medals contested in football and futsal at SUKMA 2026, Selangor has so far secured three through the men’s futsal, the women’s futsal, and the women’s football events.
The state contingent now has the opportunity to sweep all four gold medals contested in football and futsal if the men’s football squad defeats Johor in today’s final.
