Malaysia holds further talks on Thailand-Cambodia tensions

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 — Malaysia has held further talks on the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The talks took place yesterday with the leaders of both countries.

“Yesterday I spoke with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia,” he said briefly when asked about the conflict.

Anwar was speaking to the press after officiating the Global Halal Summit (GHaS) 2025 and the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) today.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who serves as the Halal Industry Development Council of Malaysia chairman, was also in attendance.

Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar; Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

News reports cited Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet accusing Thai troops of preventing more than 20 families from returning to their homes in a disputed border area, as outlined in his letter to the United Nations' Secretary-General António Guterres.

Meanwhile, Thai military spokesman Winthai Suvaree claimed that the Cambodian villagers involved in the violence a day earlier had deliberately sparked the unrest and were illegally occupying Thai territory.

Thailand and Cambodia had previously agreed to a ceasefire in July following clashes that claimed 33 lives.
