SHAH ALAM, Sept 18 — Police have arrested a 49-year-old mechanic who allegedly smoked near a pregnant woman at a restaurant in Seksyen 13 here, reported The Star.
The incident sparked a scuffle between the man and the woman’s husband.
Shah Alam police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the man was detained in Seksyen 9 shortly after returning from a motorcycle trip to Thailand.
“We will be applying for him to be remanded,” he told the English daily.
According to police, the pregnant woman complained about uneasiness when the man allegedly smoked inside the restaurant, and feared for her health and that of her unborn child.
She and her husband asked a worker to intervene, but the suspect ignored their concerns. Her husband then repeatedly advised the man to stop, but he was similarly ignored.
“The complainant claimed the suspect then blew smoke towards them, which triggered a confrontation with her husband,” said Iqbal.
The resulting scuffle led to shoving between the two men before the suspect left the premises. Police have since reviewed CCTV footage of the incident and recorded statements from witnesses at the scene.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
Police also confirmed that the suspect had no prior criminal record, while his urine test returned negative for drugs.
Iqbal said the incident was reported on September 12 after a video of the incident, which gained public attention, was uploaded online.
