Selangor councils get RM30,000 each to build delivery rider rest stops

SHAH ALAM, Sept 16 — The Selangor government will expand gig worker shelters across all local councils under the new Teduh initiative, with each council receiving a RM30,000 seed fund, reported The Star.

State executive councillor for Islam and innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah said the hubs, modelled after the Rider’s Pit Stop in Selayang, would give delivery riders and gig workers safe spaces to rest with basic amenities.

“The Selangor government is allocating RM30,000 for each local council to replicate the Rider’s Pit Stop. The hub is a supportive environment for delivery riders to rest and relax,” he said, adding that councils may seek more funds or work with e-hailing and delivery platforms.

The Teduh model was first introduced by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) in Dataran Templer and has since drawn interest statewide.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said an area near the Jalan SS2/60 and SS2/61 intersection in Taman Bandar SS2 has been identified as the city’s first Teduh site, with construction to start in mid-October and be completed by December.

“Our decision was made after considering several factors, including the high number of eateries in the area, interviews with food riders, and the fact that it is a hotspot on delivery platforms,’’ he told the English daily.

Klang Mayor Dato’ Abd Hamid Hussain said the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) is scouting suitable locations, while Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) President Ani Ahmad said a contractor will soon be appointed for its Teduh hub off Jalan Teknokrat 6 in Cyberjaya.
