Rejuvenation of Selangor's old flats hinges on Parliament passing Urban Renewal Bill — Exco

SHAH ALAM, Sept 15 — The implementation of the Urban Renewal Bill (RUU PSB) can only proceed once it is passed in Parliament, says state executive councillor for local government Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.

He said the state government remains bound by existing laws under the jurisdiction of the federal government and local authorities.

“Selangor is a developed state with rapid growth and a population of over 7.2 million people.

“There are many old flats over 50 years old that require redevelopment, but we cannot take any action until this bill is approved by Parliament,” he said.

Citing a report from Sinar Harian yesterday, the Sekinchan state assemblyman said the state government is currently awaiting the outcome of discussions and engagement sessions held at the federal level.

Ng stated that the federal government is in talks with all parties, including the Opposition, to ensure all views are considered before the bill is finalised.

“I believe the original intent of this bill is good, which is to address issues such as dilapidated housing, broken elevators, and dirty, poorly maintained surroundings that residents have endured for many years.

“The purpose of this bill is not to seize the rights of homeowners or oppress anyone, but to benefit the people who have been living in these ageing flats for more than 50 years,” he said.

Ng further stated that the matter should not be politicised, as it concerns the welfare of residents.

“Do not attempt to be a hero for political mileage without considering the challenges faced by flat residents, who are already struggling.

“The priority is to hear all perspectives, handle the matter carefully, and ensure that when the bill is passed, it genuinely benefits the people, especially in Selangor,” he added.
