KUALA LANGAT, Aug 10 — The Kampung Endah Planting Centre will increase the yield of the state’s exclusive product, Melon Selangor (MeloSel), to 30,000 fruits every season.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said the centre, which is the largest MeloSel plantation, can produce around 10,000 fruits every harvest cycle.

“This melon is becoming popular. The largest plantation is in Kampung Endah, followed by Sabak Bernam and several other areas on a smaller scale.

“We will continue widening the planting (of MeloSel) as it has great potential,” he said at the launch of Kuala Langat Melon Day, held at the Kampung Endah Planting Centre here, yesterday.

Izham also said the state government will require that MeloSel be included in baskets of local fruits to be handed out at official events, replacing imported ones like apples.

“We want to make MeloSel Selangor’s product of pride, not just for daily consumption, but also as promotional products and souvenirs.

“This step will also encourage high-value agriculture to increase farmers’ income, in line with the Selangor Agro Transformation Plan (PeTA),” he said.

MeloSel is a project under the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda), which in turn is contained in the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) agenda for the development of high-value, tech-based agroproducts.

On August 3, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the Selangor government is committed to strengthening national food security through modern agriculture projects, including by planting MeloSel at the Sungai Tengi Selatan Felda, which was an exemplary success of a high-value hydrofertigation system.
