Uncovering Selangor Melon's uniqueness, featuring modern, distinctive landscape

SHAH ALAM, March 1 — The Selangor Melon (MeloSel) cultivation site at the Agricultural Training Centre Kalumpang's Youth Agro Incubator Centre in Hulu Selangor presents a modern, well-organised, and carefully maintained agricultural landscape.

Nearly 1,000 MeloSel plants are cultivated using table fertigation methods, polybags, and planter boxes, with growing media based on coconut coir.

The crop arrangement involves approximately 500 polybags, 400 plants grown through a fertigation system, and between 350 and 400 plants using the planter box method.

The seed germination process takes 10 to 12 days, after which the seedlings are transferred to the farm, followed by a cultivation period of around 65 days before harvesting.

In addition to MeloSel, golden melon and rock melon varieties are also grown in three greenhouses, further enriching the farm’s produce.

Unlike other melon varieties, the rugby ball-like shape of the MeloSel fruit makes it distinctive. In its early stages, the fruit is green, then turns golden yellow with a slight orange hue when ripe.

Photographer Remy Arifin had the opportunity to capture every corner of the farm and the layout of the MeloSel crops, and was also given exposure to the cultivation process from the initial stage through to the harvesting season on February 5.
