More drive-through recycling centres planned for Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Jan 10 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is making plans to open at least five more automated drive-through recycling centers (ATDReC) this year.

Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir, the director of KDEB Waste Management, said that following the opening of the first ATDReC in Cyberjaya last year, another such centre will open at Masjid At-Tuqo’, Tanjung Karang, in February.

A third centre is planned for Masjid Al- Ubudiah, Tasik Tambahan, Ampang, by March the latest.

“We are planning for more drive-through centres as the one in Cyberjaya is used a lot by the people there. Having a 24-hour drop-off centre not only supports our recycling cause but it also reduces the cost to manage waste collection,” he said.

The ATDReC at Cyberjaya is so popular among the residents there that a total of 7.76 tonnes of recyclables were dropped off from April to December last year.

“On average, the ADTReC at Cyberjaya collects 862 kg of recyclables each month. From our records, paper products made up the most bulk, at 2.4 tones, during that period,” Ramli added.

Aside from having a drive-through feature, ATDReCs are installed with closed-circuit cameras for safety as they operate around the clock.

They function as recycling centres for paper products including newspapers, for plastics and drink bottles, and also for electronic wastes like cables.

Last year, the project by KDEBWM received the Innovation in Recycling Award at PC.Com’s 2024 Awards Ceremony.
