PM attends Keadilan Special Congress to amend party constitution

SHAH ALAM, Dec 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is attending the Parti Keadilan Rakyat Special Congress today to amend the party’s constitution.

The congress was convened after the 2024 Keadilan National Congress, scheduled to take place in Johor today, was postponed due to floods affecting several states.

Anwar, who is also the Keadilan president, was received by top party leaders, including deputy president Rafizi Ramli when he arrived for the congress, which is being conducted in a hybrid format as some delegates are from flood-affected states.

Also present are Keadilan secretary-general Fuziah Salleh and information chief Fahmi Fadzil.

Previously, Fuziah said the Special Congress would, among others, make amendments to the party constitution related to the number of delegates, as well as gender and ethnic quotas.

The amendments will align with the principles of democratic participation, granting party members the right to vote for leaders in future elections.

Meanwhile, Keadilan Management Committee adviser and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the proposed amendments will reflect the practices of gender, ethnic and age diversity, based on the principles of participatory democracy and proportionate representation.

He said the party’s constitution is inherently dynamic and cannot remain static forever.

“The party must be responsive to changes in the country’s political climate,” Saifuddin said in a Facebook post today.

He added that Keadilan’s constitution has been amended several times in its 25-year history. Among the most significant changes were renaming the party to Keadilan from its original name Parti Ikatan, merging Keadilan with Parti Rakyat Malaysia and implementing the one-man, one-vote system for party elections.
