SUBANG JAYA, Sept 8 — The state government has formed a strategic partnership with GCH Retail Sdn Bhd in an effort to raise awareness and promote sustainable electronic waste (e-waste) management.
State executive councillor for the environment and public health Jamaliah Jamaluddin said 17 supermarkets in Selangor will display promotional e-waste collection boxes to make it easier for the public to manage their e-waste.
“Selangor residents of can schedule e-waste collection from their homes by scanning the QR code displayed on the replicas placed at key locations in 16 Giant Supermarkets and one TMC Supermarket.
“I would like to thank GCH Retail for providing space to place these promotional e-waste collection boxes at 17 supermarkets for the convenience of Selangor's residents,” she said during the launch of the Electrical and Electronic Waste (E-Waste) programme at the Giant Supermarket in Bandar Kinrara yesterday.
Later at a press conference, Jamaliah said the state government is committed to environmental sustainability and hopes that everyone will support the green initiatives implemented by Selangor.
“There are nearly 25 million electronic waste items that will be generated, with a high potential of becoming e-waste in the future. I hope that we can all work towards properly managing electronic waste,” she said.
Previously, Selangor had set a target of collecting 15 per cent of e-waste by 2026, as part of the E-Waste Programme, which was launched on July 11.
The e-waste collection system introduced provides a door-to-door service for users who wish to send their e-waste to authorised collection points.
Users will also be rewarded with cash incentives for recycling old devices, a programme which runs until December 31.
