Selangor closes Sukma Day 8 in fourth place with 11 gold

SHAH ALAM, Aug 19 — Selangor has proved its mettle on the eighth day of the 2024 Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Sarawak.

The state contingent ended the day at fourth place on the medal rankings, with 11 gold, 24 silver and 17 bronze, a large jump from ninth place just yesterday.

At 10.34pm, state taekwondo exponent Aryssa Ashura Adnan Ashraff earned silver in the women’s below-46kg event, while A. Lokanathan settled for bronze in the men’s below-58kg event.

At 9.01pm, the women’s tenpin bowling team added another gold to the state’s medal tally, with a score of 5,598 pins.

At 7.34pm, Esther Joy Hong Li Cheng made the state proud by clinching gold in the women’s 5,000m race, clocking 19:33.12s.

At 6.54pm, in the mixed pairs lawn bowls, first-time pairing Alif Haikal Hakimi Ariffuddin-Nurul Ain Ibrahim triumphantly brought home gold.

At 6.25pm, one more silver was contributed by swimmer Yoong Jia Jia in the women’s 400m individual medley with a time of 5:12.8, losing gold to Sarawak’s Yao Kelly Teo, who clocked 5:08.15.

After earning bronze in the men’s 200m freestyle, Henry Goh won silver for Selangor in the men’s 400m individual medley, clocking 4:35.57.

As at 6.19pm, sprinter Nur Afrina Batrisyia Mohamad Rizal scored gold for Selangor in the women’s 100m event with a record-breaking time of 11.64s. The previous Sukma record had been unbroken since 2008.

Her teammate Danish Irfan Tamrin however settled for silver in the men’s 100m sprint.

Also contributing silver to the state were the men’s karate team, which came in second in the kumite event.

Meanwhile, fencer Heng Yu Shern earned bronze in the men’s individual foil event.

At 6.01pm, Muhammad Izzul Haniff Mohd Raffi came in second in the men’s triple jump, leaping 14.96m to a silver medal.

At 5.22pm, swimmer Andrew Goh won gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:01.39. 

Jayden Goh Lie Jie and Henry Goh Li Hen earned silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m freestyle.

At the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Kuching, Jayden logged a time of 1:52.55, while Henry managed 1.54.23. Gold went to the Federal Territories.

Meanwhile, Khoo Sue Enn won bronze in the women’s 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:13.28, while Khew Zi Xian contributed another silver to Selangor’s medal tally through the women’s 200m freestyle, with a time of 2:07.13.

Khar Chuan Teoh then added a silver medal to the swimming team’s haul through the men’s 50m backstroke, with a time of 27.32s.

At 3pm, gold found its way home to Selangor through the women’s kumite team event, with karate exponents N. Haretashni, B. Narmadha Devi, G. Srikah, S. Yashilini beating the Terengganu team 15-8.

Meanwhile, state rhythmic gymnast Lee Li Momoka Sam gathered three bronze medals in the hoop, ball and ribbon events, with scores of 23.650, 24.200 and 21.900, respectively.

In the group exercise, the Selangor team earned silver, with an overall score of 42.95.

At 11.30am, state athlete Tan Jing Yi clinched the silver medal in the javelin event with a 54.03 throw, losing gold to the Federal Territories' Cheah Wei Jun (56.53). Johor's Mohd Noor Iman Norman secured bronze with a 53.36 throw.

At 10.40am, C. Teban Raj gifted the state a bronze medal in the 20,000m race walking event. Gold went to the Federal Territories' Khor Jing Hong, while Sriven Tan of Penang clinched silver.
