SHAH ALAM, Aug 23 — With the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak ending tomorrow, the state's athletes have made everyone proud as they won medal after medal today.

As of 11pm, Selangor has 162 medals consisting of 51 gold, 61 silver, and 50 bronze.

This puts them in third place behind the Federal territories with 69 gold, 62 silver, and 68 bronze, and Sarawak with 72 gold, 52 silver, and 66 bronze.

The final victory of the day came from the aquatic sports men's team, who took home gold in the 4x100m medley relay event at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya, Kuching.

Team members Teoh Kar Chuan, Andrew Goh Zheng Yen, Jayden Goh Li Jie, and Loke Yew Jien were top dog against the Federal Territories and Penang, who won silver and bronze respectively.

At the same venue, the women's team scored silver in the event, where Rainne Foo Jie Xin, Khoo Sue Enn, Lim Shun Qi, and Khew Zi Xian stood side by side with their fellow swimmers from the Federal Territories and Penang, who took home gold and bronze respectively.

Earlier, Selangor won gold when the women's football team defeated Sabah 3-1 at Stadium Negeri in Kuching.

Striker Fleyvianniezie Ishak scored the first goal at the 10th minute, followed by Nurin Umairah with the second at the 48th minute, and Ayuna Anjani Lamsin the third at the 53rd minute.

This afternoon saw Selangor garner five gold medals in weightlifting, volleyball, futsal, and basketball.

For weightlifting, Nur Ellyana Maisarah Norazman won gold in the women's under-76kg category at Dewan Sukan Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan in Betong.

Volleyball saw Selangor trounce the Federal Territories at Dewan Bola Tampar Rejang Park in Sibu.

Meanwhile, for futsal, the state came out on top during their match against Sarawak at the Kota Samarahan Indoor Stadium in Kota Samarahan.

Basketball saw two medals: one by the women's 3x3 team and the men's 3x3 team, with both matches against Johor at Stadium MBKS in Kuching.

Elsewhere, the women's sepak takraw squad took home silver in their match against Sabah while the men's squad won bronze against Sarawak, with both matches at Stadium Muhibah in Bintulu.

Swimmer Teoh Kar Chuan won silver in the men's 100m backstroke event, while his colleague Jayden Goh earned bronze in the men's 800m freestyle event, at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya, Kuching.

Earlier in the day, Selangor’s relay teams were ecstatic after winning two golds for the state in the men’s and women’s 4x100m events at Stadium Sarawak in Petra Jaya today.

The men’s team, represented by Ahmad Sufi Mohd Faiesal, Danish Irfan Tamrin, Muhammad Haziq Mohamad Akhir, and Adam Hakim Samsuddin, sprinted to a 40.86s finish.

Sabah joined Selangor on the podium with a silver, clocking in 41.06s while Pahang managed a bronze with 41.21s.

Selangor’s women quartet of Dhanea Marsyella Eehsan Faez Sivam, Nur Afrina Batrisyia Mohamad Rizal, Aina Batrisyia Abdullah, and Yee Teng Lie gave an equally stunning show to come up triumphant over Johor and Sarawak.

They dominated the race at 47.97s, leaving Johor and Sarawak behind at 48.32s and 48.38s respectively.

Selangor’s women athletes have also brought home silver through volleyball and archery today.

Our women’s archery trio was beaten by Kedah 5-1 in Petra Jaya in the recurve final, while our women’s volleyball took home silver after losing 3-1 to host Sarawak. The Federal Territory received bronze.

A total of 82 gold medals were up for contention today, making it the biggest number of golds that can be won in a day since the start of Sukma 2024.

Tensions were also high following the postponement of yesterday’s women’s final football match between Selangor and Sabah due to heavy rain. The event will take place at Stadium Negeri Kuching at 4.15 this afternoon.
