Women’s futsal, diving events removed from 21st Sukma

KUCHING, April 7—Two women’s events—futsal and 10-metre (m) platform diving—have been dropped from the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which were to be held in Sarawak in August.

Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the two events had to be scrapped due to a lack of participation.

He said that the existing requirement for an event to be included is that there must be at least six participating state contingents.

“I am also sad because it (the women’s 10m platform) is one of the events that Sarawak can strike gold in, but we have been notified that only four states are willing to compete.

“Women’s futsal also has four states willing to send their representatives. Sometimes, states will look at the cost involved and decide not to send any teams for sports involving many players if they are not confident of getting a podium finish,” he told reporters after attending the “Juh Berambeh Sungkei” programme at Padang Merdeka, here yesterday.

Sarawak, which had organised Sukma in 1990 and 2016, was again chosen to host the 21st edition from August 17-24, with the Para Sukma to be held from September 20-28.
