KUALA SELANGOR, Aug 7 — Selangor, the country’s economic powerhouse that contributed 25.5 per cent of last year’s gross domestic product (GDP), stands to lose out if it does not remain under the Unity Government’s administration after the August 12 state election.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamid said Selangor has developed into a state that has helped changed many Malaysians’ lives with high paying jobs thanks to the huge amount of foreign investments.
“So, it will be a waste if Selangor can’t be retained as a state under the Unity Government that practises the Malaysia Madani concept,” he said in his speech at a thanksgiving prayer in conjunction with the National Month, here, last night.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman added that the unity among the parties in the Unity Government in Selangor is evident from Pakatan Harapan's (Harapan) decision to allow its new partner to contest more number of seats in this state election.
“Before the state assembly was dissolved, BN only had five seats, but thanks to Harapan's kindness, we are contesting 12 seats. This proves the sincerity of their friendship with us,” he said.
Prior to the state assembly dissolution, Harapan had 40 seats, of which 19 belonged to Keadilan, followed by DAP's 15 and Amanah's 6.
BN, meanwhile, had five seats, followed by Bersatu (four), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (two), and one each from PAS, Pejuang, Warisan and an independent assemblyman.
One other seat, Batang Kali, was declared vacant after its representative was absent from the state assembly for over six months.
