SHAH ALAM, July 30 — A total of 147 candidates will contest in the Selangor state elections on August 12.

From the total figure, 44 will be Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) candidates, 12 from Barisan Nasional (BN), Perikatan Nasional (PN) (56), Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) (four), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) (four), Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) (six), Parti Utama Rakyat (PUR) one and 10 Independent candidates.

There are 27 women and 120 men in total among the candidates, whose ages range from 23 to 71. The youngest candidate Melanie Ting Yi-Hlin from Muda will be running for the Bukit Antarabangsa seat, while the oldest candidate is PN’s Selat Klang incumbent, Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari.

The state polls will see straight fights in 26 of the constituencies with one of the closely watched seats to include Hulu Kelang where Selangor PN chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali will face the Selangor Menteri Besar’s political secretary, Juwairiya Zulkifli.

There will be three-cornered fights in 25 seats, with Sungai Tua as one of the hot seats as its incumbent and Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, who is also the Menteri Besar, will be defending his seat against PN candidate Muhammad Hanif Jamaluddin, who is Selangor PAS Youth secretary, and Independent candidate G. Shuman.

Another closely watched three-cornered fight is Gombak Setia, which will see Selangor Umno chief Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin going against incumbent Muhammad Hilman Idham (PN) and Mohamed Salim Mohamed Ali (Independent).

The three state seats under the Gombak parliamentary constituents and during the nomination day yesterday, it was among the liveliest as it saw the attendance of party supporters and leaders from both divides, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor and PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Gombak parliamentary constituency has 49,055 registered voters in Sungai Tua, 88,480 in Gombak Setia and 71,702 in Hulu Kelang

Five state constituencies in the state will see four-cornered fights, namely Kuala Kubu Baharu, Pandan Indah, Seri Setia, Sentosa and Dengkil.

The Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election and the state elections in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah will all take place simultaneously on August 12 with early voting beginning on August 8.
