Local councils to acquire rescue assets, prepare for disasters

SHAH ALAM, March 19 — Local authorities are encouraged to buy assets such as boats or rescue equipment in preparation for disasters.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the move would also ensure they can act quickly during critical situations, especially floods.

“The state government always tries to improve itself to ensure disasters or critical incidents are better managed. We do not want the tragedy (December 2021 floods) to happen again,” he said.

The Menteri Besar was speaking at the winding-up session on the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, during the State Legislative Assembly sitting here yesterday.

Amirudin said the local authorities which have bought rescue assets are the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ).

He added that members of the Squad Pantas (emergency response squad) in each local authority would also undergo training to deal with unforeseen incidents.

“Among other actions taken is to move supplies and assets to a safe area to be used when needed,” he added.

Heavy rains in December last year caused many areas in the state to be inundated for several days and claimed dozens of lives.
