SHAH ALAM, Feb 7 — The Selangor government wants the state to become a platform for volunteers to help the community, says Mohd Khairuddin Othman.
The state executive councillor for youth development said his team planned to set up volunteer teams in several fields to attract more members.
“For example, if we create a music volunteer team, we would go to each district to find new talent. We will set up a few other teams to attract more interest,” he said during an appreciation ceremony to recognise some 700 Selangor Volunteer (SERVE) members, here yesterday.
Mohd Khairuddin said SERVE, which was set up last year, had played an essential role during a catastrophe, especially in helping prevent the spread of Covid-19 and assisting victims in the recent flooding incident last December.
He said the Selangor government highly appreciate the commitment shown by the team of volunteers that include university students.
“SERVE had offered a helping hand regardless of time. They had not only helped during the floods last year but even during the efforts to curb the Covid-19 transmission.
“The team had been like a ‘rescue boat’ in saving the people during the disasters,” he added.
During the event, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had launched the volunteering team Service for Malaysia (Khidmat Untuk Malaysia) to help people affected by disasters.
Aside from SERVE, Selangor also has another volunteer team, Team Selangor, which has actively participated in helping affected communities during floods and water cuts.
