SHAH ALAM, June 11 — A registered user of the Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) is grateful when he obtained excellent results in the 2020 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jenjarom computer science stream student Mohamad Ikwan Adam Azha, 18, scored 8As and 1B when the results were announced yesterday.

According to him, the excellent results are very meaningful after having to go through a long period before the examination due to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the difficulty in mastering virtual learning.

“Alhamdulillah, to be honest, I am very surprised by this result considering that we (SPM students) had to study using the home based teaching and learning (PdPR) method due to the enforcement of the movement control order.

"Of course, it is a big challenge for me because not all topics can be taught online and require face-to-face guidance from teachers," he said when contacted.

The second child of the three siblings said he relied heavily on the free Selangor education portal eptrs.my when making the final preparations to sit for SPM, at the end of February.

“I found myself lacking in revision materials because I cannot go to school, so I use this learning platform to increase my knowledge and learn how to answer questions easily and accurately.

"I am grateful to the Selangor government for offering this initiative for free to SPM students," said Mohamad Ikwan who wishes to further his studies in engineering at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

Yesterday, Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin announced that last year’s SPM results recorded a National Average Grade (GPN) of 4.80, which is the country’s best in five years since 2016.

He said the percentage of candidates eligible to be awarded the SPM certificate also increased by 1.96 per cent, at 88.68 per cent, from 86.72 per cent in 2019.
