SHAH ALAM, Oct 22 — A mandatory jail sentence would be a detterent factor against polluting the source of raw water in Selangor, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
The Selangor Menteri Besar said a provision for a mandatory jail sentence will be made as polluting the rivers is a serious offence.
“Since an offence under Section 79 (of the Luas Enactment) is considered a serious offence, therefore a jail sentence should be made mandatory,” he said in a statement last night.
Earlier yesterday, Amirudin at a press conference said the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) Enactment 1999 will be amended to include a minimum penalty of RM200,000 and a maximum fine of RM1 million as well as a three years jail time for any parties found guilty of polluting the state’s waterways.
Under the current Section 79(4) of the Luas Enactment, anyone caught polluting Selangor’s waterways is liable to a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment of not more than three years or both, and a further fine of RM3,000 for each day the offence is committed after notice by Luas has been served.
The amendment will table it at the upcoming Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting in November.
