Floods, landslides affect over 1,400 households in Indonesia's East Java

JAKARTA, Nov 3 — Heavy rainfall has triggered flooding and landslides across several villages in Lumajang Regency, East Java province, Indonesia, affecting 1,417 households and disrupting road access and electricity supplies.

The National Disaster Management Agency's (BNPB) Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre acting head Berton Panjaitan said heavy rainfall since Sunday (November 1) caused rivers to overflow and embankments to breach, triggering flooding and landslides across eight villages in three districts of the regency.

"Monitoring is being carried out in isolated areas, homes at risk of damage, river levels, overflowing bridges, and embankment conditions to anticipate potential further disasters," he said in a statement today.

Berton added that local disaster management teams are assessing the damage, clearing roads blocked by landslide debris, and preparing emergency relief supplies for affected residents, while monitoring areas at risk of further disasters.

Elsewhere in East Java, flooding affected 43 households in five villages across four districts in Malang Regency yesterday, damaging a bridge and disrupting four road access routes. Floodwaters have since receded, and the roads are accessible to vehicles.

Meanwhile, two people were reported missing following a landslide at the Pelaga Eco Park glamping site in Badung Regency on Indonesia's resort island of Bali on Sunday, after heavy rainfall triggered the incident.

“A joint search and rescue operation involving rescue personnel, disaster management agencies, police, military officers, and local authorities is being carried out to locate the missing victims,” he said.

Berton also warned of the potential for further weather-related disasters as parts of Indonesia entered the rainy season in November, urging residents to monitor official weather warnings and local authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
