Rare earth policy, obesity treatment in Parliament spotlight today

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — The Dewan Rakyat sitting today will examine the status of the rare earth element (REE) industry policy, updates on obesity and diabetes treatment using GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA), and the latest developments in the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.

According to the Order Paper on Parliament's official website, Datuk Ahmad Saad @ Yahaya (PN-Pokok Sena) will ask the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister about the status of the REE industry policy framework, including the potential development of downstream industries, during the oral question-and-answer session.

Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) will ask the health minister how many patients with obesity and diabetes have received GLP-1 RA treatment under the Budget 2026 initiative, as well as the total funding allocated to health facilities.

He also wants to know whether the government's initiative to provide the treatment under Budget 2026 has been effective in reducing obesity and diabetes cases.

A question from Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Ind-Kuala Kangsar) is also expected to draw attention, as he is scheduled to ask the transport minister about the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI)-based scanners at cargo terminals in detecting smuggled dangerous goods.

He will also seek details on measures implemented to ensure that AI-generated decisions are not used as the sole basis for cargo clearance.

Meanwhile, Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) will ask the tourism, arts and culture minister to provide details on the latest achievements of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign, including foreign tourist arrivals, national revenue and the effectiveness of international promotional strategies.

Following the oral question-and-answer session, the Dewan Rakyat will continue with debates and ministerial responses on the Supply Bill (Budget 2027) at the committee stage.

According to the Dewan Rakyat calendar, the committee-stage debate on Budget 2027 is scheduled to begin today and continue until November 26.
