CYBERJAYA, NOV 1 — The fear of missing out (FOMO) phenomenon among Generation Z (Gen Z) can serve as a positive catalyst for adopting a healthy lifestyle through sports activities.

Among them is Muhammad Haziq Roswaidi, 20, a participant in the Selangor Marathon (SELMAR) 2026, who said the growing trend of running events is piquing young people’s interest and encouraging them to seek new experiences.

“To me, FOMO in the context of running is a good thing; it not only offers a fresh experience but also helps improve physical health and sharpens the mind.

“Before signing up, I always check the designs of the race shirts and medals, as well as the proposed routes. The route for SELMAR 2026 was quite challenging, with plenty of uphill climbs, but it was enjoyable and provided a unique experience,” he told Media Selangor.

Muhammad Haziq, who competed in the 21-kilometre (km) category, said that SELMAR 2026 was his second half-marathon this year, an opportunity he discovered through Instagram and invitations from friends.

Another participant, Muhammad Fadzilkhan Mohamed Siddiq, 20, said that social media platforms like TikTok are also key drivers encouraging young people to participate in running events.

He added that the negative perception of FOMO culture among Gen Z shouldn’t necessarily be seen as a bad thing, provided it motivates them to engage in positive, self-beneficial activities.

“In my view, FOMO, when directed toward positive pursuits, is something that should be encouraged. While it’s true that Gen Z often faces stigma, especially on social media, what truly matters is having support from family and friends.

“If experiencing FOMO leads you toward something positive, then go for it. You can try it, train, and pursue your personal interests. What matters is that it provides benefits and encourages you to stay active,” he said.

SELMAR 2026, held today at Persiaran Flora, drew an encouraging turnout of 5,826 participants, including 42 international entrants from the United States, the United Kingdom, Africa, France, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

The event featured four running categories, 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km, and also included a category for children with disabilities, including those who are bedridden or use specialised wheelchairs, allowing them to participate alongside their parents.
