SHAH ALAM, Oct 27 — Former natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad gave a statement to the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) today about an investigation into a khalwat (close proximity) case linked to him.
Berita Harian reported that he arrived at the JAIS office at 9.15am, wearing a white shirt, a black coat, and a face mask, and was seen leaving the building at 1.30pm.
Syariah lawyer Muhammad Amirul Ashraf A Ghani said his client appeared to facilitate the completion of an investigation under Section 29 of the Sharia Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.
Statements from Nazmi and the woman linked to the case were taken separately.
"In terms of the investigation, we have provided our cooperation. We are now waiting to see whether charges will be filed or not.
“That will be determined by the Selangor Sharia Prosecution Department," he said when met on the premises of the JAIS building today.
Regarding the possibility of action being taken against the individual alleged to have spied on Nazmi’s movements before circulating a related video, Amirul said the matter would be addressed later.
Meanwhile, JAIS Director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad confirmed that the politician was present at the department’s headquarters but declined to comment further.
Previously, it was reported that Nazmi confirmed he was the individual detained by JAIS in connection with a case involving being in close proximity with a woman who is not his mahram (a person with whom marriage is permanently prohibited), in a private space in Petaling at 6pm on October 15.
