SHAH ALAM, Oct 19 — The Selangor People's Tuition Programme (PTRS) is proposed to be expanded to Form Three students next year, with a focus on early intervention to improve their mastery of mathematics.

Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or Yayasan MBI, chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said the proposed expansion and improvements to the free tuition programme were expected to benefit more than 200,000 students in Selangor.

He said the proposal aimed to help students strengthen their mathematics skills before sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, in line with the state government's previous manifesto pledge.

"This means we are bringing forward mathematics intervention to Form Three to better prepare students for SPM, as performance in the subject nationwide is rather worrying.

"I presented the proposal at the recent state education executive councillor's retreat, including a request for an additional RM2 million allocation for PTRS under Selangor Budget 2027.

"This would bring the total proposed allocation for PTRS and related education initiatives, such as the Didik Kasih Programme, to RM14 million, compared with RM12 million spent this year," he told Media Selangor.

"By expanding the programme to Form Three students, we could surpass 200,000 beneficiaries under PTRS, which would also fulfil the state government's previous manifesto pledge," he said.

Previously, Ahmad Azri said Yayasan MBI had received letters of appreciation from the Selangor State Education Department for three consecutive years in recognition of PTRS' contribution to students' SPM performance.

He said PTRS had helped improve the performance of SPM candidates in Selangor, as reflected in the state's average grade (GPN), which had improved steadily over the years.

The free tuition programme currently provides additional classes in Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, History and Additional Mathematics for Form Four and Form Five students from low-income (B40) families or those with average or poor academic performance.
