Govt settles RM17.15b in excess tax refunds as of September 30

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — The government has settled tax overpayment refunds amounting to RM17.15 billion, involving 3.23 million taxpayer cases, for the period up to September 30, 2026.

The Finance Ministry (MOF) said this total included RM6.38 billion refunded to 3.1 million individual taxpayers and RM8.95 billion refunded to over 130,000 corporate taxpayers, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

To strengthen tax refund processing, the Inland Revenue Board has implemented strategies that are fairer and more equitable, ensuring refund allocations are distributed in an orderly and effective manner based on the age of outstanding cases, while also prioritising MSMEs and companies facing cash flow issues.

“The government is also committed to ensuring that outstanding refunds are fully settled promptly as part of efforts to enhance tax administration efficiency and safeguard taxpayers' rights, in line with the MADANI Government’s fiscal reform agenda,” it said in a written reply published on the Parliament website today.

The MOF was responding to Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng's query on the timeframe for settling excess tax refunds and the two per cent compensation for corporate taxpayers for the 2025 year of assessment, as well as the amount of outstanding refunds by year of assessment and the number of affected taxpayers.
