Haze-related illnesses on the rise

SHAH ALAM, Oct 10 — Haze-related illnesses such as upper respiratory tract infections and conjunctivitis have increased, the Health Ministry said.

In a statement today, the ministry said upper respiratory tract infections rose from 3,509 cases to 3,875, an increase of 10.43 per cent, according to data reported for epidemiological weeks (EW) 39 and 40.

“The ministry also notes that the haze has persisted for several weeks in specific areas, with air pollution levels fluctuating according to location and prevailing conditions.

To monitor the haze's impact on public health, the ministry is conducting surveillance of haze-related illnesses through 78 selected health facilities nationwide.

“Conjunctivitis (eye inflammation) has increased from 102 cases to 129 cases, an increase of 26.47 per cent,” the statement read.

In the same period, the ministry said asthma cases declined from 535 to 462 cases, a decrease of 13.64 per cent.

The ministry also said it will continue to strengthen surveillance of haze-related illnesses, as exposure to polluted air can adversely affect health, particularly among children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with lung or heart conditions.

The ministry urges the public to remain vigilant, minimise exposure to haze, prioritise their own health and that of their families, and take preventive measures, especially in areas with unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings.

“Avoid or postpone outdoor activities, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with lung or heart conditions.“Limit time spent outdoors and use an appropriate face mask, such as an N95 mask, if it is necessary to be outside during hazy conditions, as well as to avoid or postpone strenuous physical activities,” it said.

The ministry also said that it will continue to monitor the haze situation and its impact on public health, while ensuring that health facilities, medication supplies, and healthcare personnel remain ready to provide necessary services.

The public can find more information on preventive measures and health protection during the haze on the ministry website at https://infosihat.moh.gov.my/isu-semasa/51-jerebu.html.
