SHAH ALAM, Oct 7 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj today received the Silver Jubilee Keris, specially crafted to mark the 25th anniversary of his reign.
In a Facebook post, the Selangor Royal Office said the ceremonial keris was inspired by His Royal Highness’ appreciation of the art, heritage and rich traditions associated with the Malay keris.
According to the statement, the Silver Jubilee Keris carries rich symbolism, reflecting the Ruler’s reign, Selangor’s identity, and the significance of the Silver Jubilee.
“The 25-inch length of the keris symbolises His Royal Highness’ 25-year reign, while the use of seven types of metal represents the unification of strengths.
“The white eagle motif embodies courage and authority, while the use of ‘Black Healer Wood’ connects the piece to Malay heritage and traditional beliefs.
“The buffalo horn symbolises resilience and exquisite craftsmanship, while the nine-gemstone inlay represents the nine districts of Selangor,” it said.
The design underwent several rounds of talks and refinement before it was presented to Sultan Sharafuddin for consideration and refinement, ultimately receiving his royal assent.
Skilled artisans were chosen to bring the design to life, with each responsible for crafting key components including the blade, hilt and scabbard, as well as the silverwork and metal ornamentation.
The Silver Jubilee Keris took 12 months to make, with each component meticulously crafted before the final stages of setting gemstones, finishing and polishing.
Among those involved in the creation of the keris were Engku Panglima Setia Diraja Dato’ Syed Haizam Hishamuddin Putra Jamalullail, Dato’ Abdul Muati Zamri Ahmad, Dato’ Ar Wan Burhanuddin Wan Hassan and Dato’ Mohamed Raffe Chekku, who spearheaded the project through Yayasan Rafulin.
The keris features 25 chevron motifs, symbolising His Royal Highness’ 25-year reign and reflecting the past and present, while embodying hopes for the future.
The Silver Jubilee Keris also showcases the richness of Malay heritage and the dedication of artisans to preserving and elevating the craft of keris-making for future generations.
