Melaka polls: Harapan candidates to be announced in two weeks

KLANG, Oct 3 — Pakatan Harapan will announce its list of candidates for the Melaka election within the next fortnight, said bloc polls director Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He added that preparations for the election started two months ago through a series of meetings and coordination of polls machinery.

“The machinery is active. I think that from two months ago, meetings with the machinery and teams are being done, and I think the Harapan machinery is active and ready.

“The alignment, that’s the only question left. We just need to announce candidates. I am waiting for a date, God willing, soon, in another week or two we will announce our candidates,” he said when met after a Tabung Warisan Anak Selangor (TAWAS) payout handover ceremony at KSL Convention Centre here today.

Amirudin said Harapan is open to holding discussions with other parties to form agreements ahead of the polls.

“We are open. If there is room for discussion, we will talk. If not, we are also ready to compete according to existing capacities and agreements,” he explained.

He also said Harapan is studying the feasibility of a potential collaboration with Bersatu.

“We are looking into the possibility and maybe in the next week or two, we will (have an answer).

“Sometimes, when political parties negotiate, talk (and) talk, the talk doesn’t end. Until the day candidates are announced, only then will it end. That’s normal,” he said.

“The political environment is very fluid and each (party) is looking for the best solutions and partners for the best results… so it is trial and error. Some things work out, some don’t, but we will continue trying to (provide for the people) based on what we have proven in the state and with federal(-level) accomplishments,” said Amirudin, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president.

Previously, Melaka Harapan said seats to be contested have been divided among its component parties, but the final lineup will be decided after a discussion involving the Harapan presidential council, Melaka leaders, and Amirudin.

The Election Commission will hold a special meeting on October 7 to decide important dates for the Melaka election.
