KKR developing National Road Reference Platform to streamline data ecosystem

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — The Works Ministry (KKR) is currently developing a National Reference Platform for Road Information under the MyJalan initiative to consolidate data across federal, state, and local authorities, as well as highway concessionaires.

Its minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the initiative aims to create a unified national road data ecosystem governed by standard frameworks and streamlined collection processes.

"Our objective is to have one national picture of Malaysia's roads, one data, one standard, and one national road data ecosystem," he said during a media conference at the MyASEAN Roads And Traffic Tech Expo (MyARTTE) 2026 today.

Also present were Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff, Public Works Department deputy director-general (infrastructure sector) Mohd Shahrom Ahmad Saman, Association of Highway Concessionaires Malaysia president Azmee Nin, and Touch N' Go Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Praba Sangarajoo.

Prior to officiating the closing ceremony of MyARTTE 2026, Nanta chaired the MyJalan National Data Agenda roundtable meeting and witnessed the exchange of the Road Asset Data Declaration documents between KKR and participating state governments.

He added that the ministry has secured participation from more than half of the states, including Penang, which signed the agreement today, and expressed confidence that the remaining five states will follow suit, as they just need a little more time.

An immediate priority under the roadmap is establishing clear road ownership boundaries using standard Geographic Information System mapping.

To guarantee data integrity, road asset owners will be required to keep their databases complete and regularly updated under strict key performance indicators, action plans, and timelines.

Nanta emphasised that accurate, data-driven decision-making is essential to improve road maintenance, optimise planning, and enable swift responses to public complaints to reduce traffic congestion and prevent fatal accidents.

Calling for greater cross-sector collaboration to eliminate silos amid overlapping jurisdictions, he said authorities must keep the public well informed about interconnected road networks so people can travel with confidence in safety and comfort.

Earlier in his speech, Nanta said initiatives such as MYJalan and the No Wrong Door Policy matter because they reflect a simple but powerful principle: government must organise itself around the needs of the rakyat, not institutional boundaries.
