KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — State leaders have expressed their condolences to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his family following the death of his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, who passed away at the National Heart Institute today at the age of 100.
Condolences came from Selangor, Melaka, and Kedah, with state leaders paying tribute to Dr Siti's contributions to public healthcare, women's welfare and community service.
In Selangor, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari prayed for the deceased's soul to be showered with mercy and placed among the righteous.
In a post on his official Facebook page, he said Dr Siti, who was born in Kampung Jawa, Klang in 1926, was among Malaysia's first female medical doctors and had contributed greatly to the people.
In Melaka, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh described her death as a great loss to the country, saying she would be remembered not merely as the wife of a statesman but also as a prominent woman and medical doctor who devoted her life to public healthcare, maternal and child welfare, women's development, and community service.
“As one of the earliest Malay women to pursue medicine, Allahyarhamah's life journey is proof that knowledge coupled with sincerity and dedication can leave a lasting impact on people's lives.
“Her contributions and gentle character will continue to be remembered by Malaysians, particularly generations of women who regard her struggle as a source of inspiration,” he said in a Facebook post.
In Kedah, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, representing the state government and its people, conveyed his condolences and described Dr Siti as someone who had contributed greatly to the country and its people.
He added that she had a close connection with Kedah during her service as a medical doctor and civil servant, particularly through her efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare and the well-being of rural communities.
“Her contributions to the people of Kedah are not merely recorded in the history of the state's healthcare services but are also etched in the memories of those who received her care and service.
“Her passing is a great loss to the country. May all the knowledge, kindness, dedication and contributions she gave throughout her life become lasting charitable deeds and be rewarded in the best manner by Allah,” Sanusi said in a statement today.
In Penang, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and the state leadership also conveyed their condolences to Dr Siti's family, praying they would be given continued strength, fortitude and patience in facing this difficult time.
“Her passing will surely leave a legacy that will live on, inspire and be remembered by generations to come,” he said in a Facebook post.
In Kelantan, Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud conveyed his condolences to Dr Mahathir and his family following the death of his spouse.
“May Allah SWT shower His mercy upon her soul, forgive all her sins and place her among His righteous and faithful servants,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Meanwhile, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail also conveyed his condolences to Dr Siti's family, praying that her soul would be placed among the faithful and righteous.
Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah also conveyed his condolences, praying that Allah SWT would shower His mercy upon her soul, forgive her sins, and place her among the faithful.
Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim prayed that Allah SWT would shower His mercy upon the deceased's soul and forgive all her sins.
“Her stature and noble character will continue to be remembered as part of the nation's history and heritage,” he said in a statement.
