KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — A mobile police station will be deployed near former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s official residence along Jalan Langgak Duta starting tomorrow to facilitate security arrangements during any transfer from prison to the residence.
Sentul district police chief ACP Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam said the mobile police station was scheduled to be deployed at the residence from 7am.
“The mobile police station is not for the purpose of providing 24-hour security for Datuk Seri Najib. It is to provide security during his return process, including for local and foreign media, neighbours, and to prevent traffic congestion and the presence of supporters,” he said when contacted today.
On the status of the residence as the location for the house arrest, Anuar said the police have yet to receive any official confirmation.
“I cannot confirm it because I have not received any information either, but one of Datuk Seri Najib’s official residences is under my jurisdiction. There is a possibility that other residences belonging to him are also being considered,” he said.
On the agency responsible for monitoring Najib if he serves his sentence under house arrest, Anuar said that based on the information received, the responsibility would lie with the Malaysian Prisons Department and not the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
He added that four Prisons Department officers visited the residence yesterday to conduct an inspection and assessment.
“The responsibility is under the Prisons Department because four prison officers came yesterday to conduct an inspection and assessment. PDRM will only facilitate Datuk Seri Najib’s movement and, at the same time, ensure the safety of the media,” Anuar said.
The police deployment during the process is expected to comprise one supervisor and two personnel, supported by a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit.
Yesterday, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said that the standard operating procedures for Najib’s house arrest would cover matters including visits, security, and monitoring of the ex-premier movements after the relevant official letter was received.
On Friday (September 18), His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, consented to a conditional pardon allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine.
The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said the order was decided at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya Federal Territories, held at Istana Negara.
Najib has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, following his conviction in the SRC International case.
