SHAH ALAM, Sept 17 — Malaysians can begin applying for the new MyKad from today at National Registration Department (JPN) offices nationwide.
According to JPN’s frequently asked questions (FAQ), applications at 40 selected branches equipped with printing facilities can be completed on the same day, while applications at branches without the facility will take up to five working days.
“Existing MyKad holders do not need to replace their MyKad with the MyKad Generasi Baharu,” it said.
However, holders of old plastic identity cards, Kad Pengenalan Bermutu Tinggi (KPT)
and MyKad without a ghost image are required to replace their cards.
The new MyKad features enhanced security measures, including laser engraving of the holder’s personal information and photograph, as well as a second ghost image.
“The second ghost image is used as an additional security feature to strengthen protection against manipulation,” JPN said.
The card also uses high-durability polycarbonate material and an upgraded smart chip supporting biometric fingerprint data and the Java Card Operating System (JCOS).
It added that Touch 'n Go facility is no longer available in the new-generation MyKad.
Users can continue using Touch 'n Go services through the Touch 'n Go eWallet application or a separate Touch 'n Go card.
JPN also confirmed that replacing the MyKad will not affect Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) balances or eligibility.
It said replacing the card will also not change the holder’s identity card number or personal information in its records.
For banking and other services using MyKad, adjustments will be carried out gradually with the relevant parties to ensure compatibility.
Fees for applications or replacements depend on the application category and rates set by JPN.
