BANGI, Sept 15 — The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools is among the areas that need greater attention as the education sector prepares for future challenges.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said exposing students to the technology was important to prepare them for change and enable them to harness AI for their future benefit.
“This is one of the areas we may need to focus on — how the adoption of AI can begin at the school level.
“This will ensure students are prepared to compete with AI, which may take over some of their tasks, or learn how to use AI for their benefit in the future,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters at a gala dinner held in conjunction with the 64th Malaysian School Principals’ Education Management National Conference 2026 at Hotel Tenera here last night.
The event was also attended by Selangor Education Department director Datin Wan Nor Ashikin Abu Kassim and 689 principals from across Malaysia.
Amirudin said continued support for the education sector was vital to ensuring Selangor remained competitive, given the large number of students and teachers in the state.
“We have nearly one million students and 63,000 teachers, some of whom are secondary school teachers. That is why continued support for the education sector is crucial to ensuring Selangor remains competitive,” he said.
According to Amirudin, the state government maintains regular communication with the Education Ministry and the Selangor Education Department to address various education-related issues.
He said these efforts extended beyond academics to encompass students’ overall development, including training and leadership.
“Recently, I also met nearly 400 at-risk and troubled students. We are looking at what we can do to help them address the challenges they face,” he said.
In a related development, the state government has allocated RM50,000 to the Selangor chapter of the Malaysian School Principals’ Council (MPSM) to support its role as host of this year’s event, association activities and efforts to enhance the teaching profession.
Amirudin said the allocation requested by MPSM Selangor would be disbursed in a lump sum within one to two weeks.
“Besides helping with the organisation of the event we are hosting this year, MPSM can also use the funds for its association activities.
“God willing, the allocation will be put to good use to enhance the teaching profession and support the activities of principals throughout Selangor,” he said.
