MBI, UNISEL boosts ESG integration with sustainability forum

SHAH ALAM, Sept 12 — Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, and Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) have pooled their expertise in investment and academics to strengthen environmental, social and governance (ESG) integration through the ESG and Sustainability Forum held on Thursday.

The inaugural event, themed “From Vision to Action: Realising a Sustainable, Resilient and Strategic Future”, gathered around 150 participants from MBI subsidiaries, state agencies, and strategic stakeholders.

MBI in a statement said the forum was a platform to combine its investment mandate with UNISEL’s academic expertise to translate sustainability agendas into long-term effects.

MBI Group chief executive officer Dato’ Saipolyazan M. Yusop said the strengths of both institutions complement each other and can narrow the gap between sustainability aspirations and agenda implementation.

“Sustainability cannot be achieved by any one institution alone. MBI Selangor has an investment mandate and implementing capability, while UNISEL contributes its research, knowledge and talent expertise.

“By combining these strengths, we can translate sustainability goals into real action that create long-term value for Selangor, the community and the future,” he added.

The forum also featured academia, public policy, sustainability governance, and industry experts with the involvement of the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), Selangor Climate Adaptation and Change Centre (SCAC), and academicians.

Also present was Wesam Al Madhoun, founder of Global Ambassadors of Sustainability (GAoS) and ex-fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who put forth discussions on collaborations between governments, academic institutions and industries in making ESG integration, sustainability and resilience a success.

According to MBI, talks also focused on efforts to improve ESG awareness among organisation leaders, boost sustainability governance, reporting and performance-monitoring across MBI Group.

Participants also exchange views on stronger cooperation between stakeholders to support economic resilience, climate adaptation, innovation, inclusive growth, and future competitiveness.

Saipolyazan said the forum is the basis to the continued cooperation between MBI and UNISEL in the sustainability research, talent development, capacity building, and applied innovation fields.
