Ex-Tabung Haji chairman Azeez to face remand proceedings

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — Former Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim will be brought to the Sessions Court here this morning for remand proceedings under Section 420 of the Penal Code, his lawyer Datuk Abu Bakar Isa Ramat said.

Azeez was arrested by the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department yesterday afternoon before being taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

“Police will apply for a remand order under Section 420 of the Penal Code,” he told reporters briefly at the lobby of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex.

According to the court system, Azeez is also scheduled to be charged before Judge Azura Alwi at the Sessions Court here in connection with offences under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act.

On August 27, Azeez and a former secretary general of the Treasury were each remanded for seven days until September 2 to assist investigations following revelations concerning the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the institution.

Both individuals were investigated under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.

The RCI report on TH that was made public on July 29, among other things, recommended a forensic audit to scrutinise how past investment decisions were made, which resulted in TH suffering a severe decline in the value of its assets.

The RCI, which investigated TH’s management and operations from 2014 to 2020, also identified several troubled investments that required forensic audits.

The report also found suspicious transactions and concealment of information.

The RCI’s scope of inquiry covered issues involving TH during the period, with reference to findings by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY) and Roland Berger, but excluded the restructuring and recovery plans that were being implemented at the time.
