SHAH ALAM, Sept 2 — The Education Ministry (MOE) will abolish programmes deemed unnecessary that don’t directly contribute to students’ learning to reduce teachers’ workload, said minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek.
She said this includes awards for cleanest toilets, prettiest gardens and best classrooms, which require that teachers spend considerable time and energy on duties beyond their teaching responsibilities.
“We know that behind every competition, it is not just about decorating. There are meetings. There are preparations. There is documentation. There are reports. There is time and energy that teachers have to spend,” she said in a Facebook post last night.
Fadhlina said the ministry will abolish unnecessary programmes to allow teachers to focus on their primary responsibility of educating children.
She added the move is one of seven measures to reduce the burden on teachers, with the remaining initiatives to be announced soon.
The policy is part of the “Fadhlina Buat Apa?” series, which was announced by the minister last week to share MOE’s accomplishments under the Madani Government.
On August 27, Fadhlina said the series was launched after frequent tags from social media users asking: “What is Fadhlina doing?”
