BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 28 — The government has agreed to allocate funds for an allowance for Form Six students under Budget 2027, which will be tabled in October, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the decision was made after taking into account that students at this level currently do not receive any allowance, unlike the assistance provided to students from primary school up to Form Five and those at university level.
“Recently, during my dialogue with pre-university students, I said that from Year One to Form Five, there are allowances, and at university, there are allowances. But Form Six, pre-university students, do not receive any.
“So I would like to announce that in our Budget in October, I will provide an allocation and allowance for Form Six students,” he said during the Temu Anwar programme in conjunction with the Ambang Merdeka Sahabat MADANI at the Tuanku Bainun Teacher Education Institute campus today, which was also attended by Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek.
However, the allocation amount has yet to be finalised and would be determined based on the government’s financial capacity at the time.
Earlier in her speech, Fadhlina said that the proposed allowance was among 12 resolutions raised at the MADANI Pre-University Congress held in Klang this morning.
The Education Ministry (MOE) has accepted all the resolutions put forward by student delegates and would study them for improvements, while also seeking ways to ensure the proposals could be implemented.
Meanwhile, Anwar said the education sector received the largest allocation because the government is investing in the nation's future to cultivate a generation that is not only knowledgeable but also upright, disciplined, and capable of critical thinking.
He emphasised that academic excellence must go hand in hand with values, ethics, and respect for others.
"Knowledge without values is not enough to build a progressive and civilised nation. Education must also be a pathway to opportunity and transformation. Every child, regardless of their family background, must be given the space to learn, grow, and reach their full potential," Anwar said.
Through education, Malaysia can build a generation bold enough to explore future-oriented fields such as AI, technology and semiconductors, while continuing to contribute to education, public service, and the many other sectors that shape the nation's future.
Under Budget 2026, the MOE received an allocation of RM66.2 billion for this year, up from RM64.2 billion previously.
